A Day at Mapperton Gardens: One of Dorset’s Hidden Gems

One of the things we enjoy most about staying in Dorset is discovering places that feel as though they’ve been quietly waiting to be found. Mapperton Gardens is one of those places.

Tucked away amongst rolling countryside in West Dorset, Mapperton Gardens combines a beautiful Elizabethan manor house with some of the most impressive gardens we’ve visited anywhere in the county.

From the moment we arrived, there was a sense of calm about the place. The golden stone walls, carefully clipped hedges, and surrounding countryside create a setting that feels wonderfully timeless.

Exploring the Gardens

The famous Italianate gardens are undoubtedly the highlight. Terraces, topiary, fountains, and beautifully planted borders lead your eye down through the landscape, while the surrounding Dorset countryside stretches away beyond the garden walls.

We spent much longer wandering than we had intended, stopping regularly to admire the views and discover hidden corners tucked between pathways and flower beds.

The further you explore, the more the formal gardens gradually give way to a wilder landscape. Paths descend into a beautiful hidden combe where the atmosphere changes completely and nature takes over.

Perfect for Families

What surprised us most was how much children seemed to enjoy the gardens.

While adults admire the architecture and planting, younger visitors can run around the more natural areas, explore woodland paths, and enjoy the sense of adventure that comes with discovering hidden corners of the estate.

During our visit we spotted Indian runner ducks, bantams, and plenty of wildlife making themselves at home amongst the gardens.

It reminded us of another favourite family day out, the Cerne Abbas Giant, where history and the Dorset countryside combine in a completely different but equally memorable way.

A Relaxed Dorset Afternoon

After exploring the grounds, we spent some time browsing the gift shop, which stocks a lovely mix of locally made products, plants grown on the estate, and gifts from around the world.

No visit would be complete without stopping at the Sawmill Café for lunch and a cup of tea before heading home.

It’s exactly the sort of place where a quick visit easily turns into an entire afternoon.

If you’re staying at Pleasant Spot, Mapperton Gardens makes a wonderful day out and is easily combined with exploring nearby villages and some of Dorset’s most beautiful countryside.

One of Dorset’s Most Beautiful Estates

There are plenty of beautiful gardens in Dorset, but Mapperton feels particularly special.

Perhaps it’s the combination of the historic manor house, spectacular gardens, rolling countryside, and relaxed atmosphere. Whatever the reason, it’s somewhere we find ourselves recommending time and again.
