More Than 6,000 Years of History

Although best known for its Iron Age history, archaeological excavations have shown that Maiden Castle’s story stretches back much further. Evidence suggests people first occupied the site more than 6,000 years ago during the Neolithic period.

Over the centuries the hilltop evolved into one of the most significant settlements in southern Britain, reflecting thousands of years of human activity and development.

The Roman Conquest

One of the most dramatic chapters in Maiden Castle’s history came in AD43 during the Roman invasion of Britain. The hillfort was captured by Roman forces and its inhabitants were eventually relocated to the newly established settlement of Durnovaria, now known as Dorchester.

This marked the end of Maiden Castle’s role as a major defensive stronghold, but its impressive earthworks remain as a lasting reminder of this turbulent period in British history.
