A Day in Lyme Regis: One of Dorset’s Most Beautiful Seaside Towns

There are plenty of beautiful places along the Dorset coast, but few capture the imagination quite like Lyme Regis Dorset.

Built on a hillside overlooking the sea, Lyme Regis has a timeless charm that seems to draw people back again and again. Every visit feels slightly different, whether we’re wandering the narrow streets, exploring the harbour, or simply sitting by the water watching the world go by.

Walking the Famous Cobb

No visit to Lyme Regis Dorset is complete without a walk along the Cobb, the historic harbour wall that has protected the town for centuries.

The Cobb became famous around the world through The French Lieutenant’s Woman, but seeing it in person is something else entirely. Standing on the harbour wall and looking back towards the town, you get one of the most iconic views anywhere on the Jurassic Coast.

One of our favourite discoveries was learning about the Cobb’s unusual acoustic trick. If you stand beyond the double steps where the wall begins to curve and a friend walks further along near the steps known as Granny’s Teeth, you can hold a surprisingly clear conversation across the harbour wall.

It feels like a little secret that many visitors walk straight past.

Jurassic Coast Charm

As part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, Lyme Regis has a strong connection to fossils and geology.

The town embraces this heritage everywhere you look. Even the streetlamps feature ammonite designs, a subtle reminder of the ancient history hidden within the cliffs and beaches.

It’s easy to spend hours exploring the seafront and admiring the dramatic coastal scenery that makes this part of Dorset so special.

A Great Family Day Out

One of the reasons we enjoy visiting Lyme Regis is that there’s something for everyone.

Families can enjoy the beach, crazy golf, amusement arcades, and traditional seaside attractions, while those looking for a slower pace can browse independent shops, enjoy a coffee overlooking the sea, or simply stroll along the promenade.
